In July 2008, the State Board of Education adopted Rule 6A.6.0784, which states that:
"every member of the governing body of a charter school operating in Florida shall participate annually in governance training on or before August 1 of each calendar year. The training must be delivered consistent with a training plan that has been submitted and approved by the Department as described in this rule.
"(b) Training for charter school governing boards with one or more members who have had no previous board service or have served on the board for less than ninety (90) days must include a minimum of four (4) hours of instruction focusing on government in the sunshine, conflicts of interest, ethics, and financial responsibility as specified in Section 1002.33(9)(k), F.S.
"(c) A minimum of two (2) hours of refresher instruction on the four (4) topics in Section 1002.33(9)(k), F.S., may be offered if a charter school’s governing board is composed entirely of members who have served continuously on the school’s board for ninety (90) days or more, and all board members have completed four (4) hours of instruction as described in paragraph (1)(b) of this rule."

Every year, members of Florida charter school governing boards must participate in state-approved training by August 1 of that year.
The type of training depends on the board members' experience and whether they have already participated in an initial four-hour training course, but all board members must receive training on an annual basis by August 1 of each year.
FCPCS is pleased to offer two state-approved governance training courses to help board members meet this mandate. Please read the descriptions below to determine which training is appropriate for each member of your charter school's governing board.
This training is designed for governing boards with one or more members who have had no previous board service or have served on the board for less than ninety days.
Board members must complete state-approved training by August 1 of each calendar year. Register for four-hour training.
This two-hour course is designed for governing boards if ALL of the members have 1) served continuously on the school’s board for ninety days or more and 2) completed four hours of initial state-approved training.
Members who are new to the board must still complete the four-hour course even if other members have previously completed the four-hour training. This course must be completed by August 1 of each year. Register for two-hour Refresher Course.
The electronic version of this engaging course on charter school governing boards can be used as a self-paced training for an individual board member or can be used as a training for small or large groups. Your governing board will learn about its primary responsibilities and effective strategies to ensure that it sets high expectations, operates under the Sunshine Laws and is prepared to meet the challenges of intense scrutiny. The course includes a PowerPoint presentation with hands-on activities and informational handouts that cover all aspects of effective board governance.
