FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 31, 2022) – Cynthia McCauley, founding Director of Chautauqua Charter School in Panama City, has been named 2022 Bay County “Teacher of a Lifetime” by Bay District Schools.

Bay District Schools Superintendent Bill Husfelt and Florida State Rep. Jay Trumbull presented the award to McCauley in a ceremony as she was surrounded by many of her students.  She earned the award because of her devotion to meeting the needs of Chautauqua Charter School students with differing abilities.

Rep. Trumbull sponsored the award and both he and his wife attended Chautauqua High School during McCauley’s tenure there.  He said she has made a significant difference in the Panama City community.

According to its mission, Chautauqua Charter School is dedicated to preparing disabled students to meet the demands of the world they are about the enter.  The school also strives to “enlighten the world about the needs of the disabled.”

McCauley has said the school continues to provide and grow the education of Chautauqua Charter School students as they enter adulthood.  It also focuses on providing travel opportunities for Chautauqua Charter School students, many of whom have been to multiple continents around the world.

A veteran educator with a 47-year track record, McCauley began teaching at A. Crawford Mosley High School in Lynn Haven, Fla., in 1975.  When she moved to nearby Bay High School in Panama City, she focused more on working with disabled students.  McCauley is dyslexic, as are several members of her family.

“The Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools applauds the meaningful work of Cynthia McCauley,” said FCPCS President Robert Haag.  “We want to congratulate her on winning the 2022 Teacher of a Lifetime Award.”
